NCTE Achievement Award in Writing Announced

For the 14th year, SDHS students have shown their exceptional writing ability by winning the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Award in Writing. This year we have two winners: LaToya Lee and Jennifer Paton. In their junior year, LaToya and Jennifer along with Julie Kaufman and Anamaria Robles, were selected to represent San Diego High in this prestigious national writing competition. The students wrote a creative piece and sat for a timed essay. And then they waited. LaToya and Jennifer finally received the good news, helping to continue San Diego High's tradition of being the most winning school in the nation in this competition. Winning this award means that NCTE will recommend that colleges consider LaToya and Jennifer for both admission and scholarships. In addition, they will be honored by wearing the Writing Academy red stoles at graduation. All four competitors will also wear the red Writing Academy tassel at graduation.

Celebrating National
Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month. SDHS celebrated poetry in a number of ways:

• magnetic poems on student lockers and in the Writing Center
• chalk poetry on the school walkways
• an all-poetry issue of Write Stuff
• publication of Reflections for an April Day—a collection of SDHS staff members' favorite poems
• poetry readings on Caver Connection, the student TV show
