Writing Across the Curriculum/ Writing to Learn
Teachers are encouraged to incorporate writing activities into all subject areas and to use the writing process to enhance subject learning. Some purposes of writing include:

  to focus students' attention on subject matter
to engage students actively with the subject matter
to arouse students' curiosity about subject matter
to help students discover disparate elements in subject matter
to help students make connections between subject matter and their lives
to help students make their own meaning from subject matter
to help students think aloud on paper in various ways: associating, analyzing,
    synthesizing, etc.
  to help students identify what they do and don't know
to diagnose students' learning successes and problems
