What is the Extended Essay?
An Extended Essay has the following traits:

o the topic is selected by the student
o it includes a personal perspective
o it is written in depth on a limited topic within one of the IB subject areas
o it uses primary sources
o it is an experience in independent research

Through the research and writing of an Extended Essay, the student shows his/her ability to engage in personal research and to present their findings in an organized manner. Although this is an independent project, students are given considerable support—students attend a series of writing workshops through the Writing Academy; and work under the guidance of an Extended Essay advisor, a teacher in the subject area of their Extended Essay.
