How do you earn an IB Diploma?
All IB Diploma candidates are required to take one subject from each of the six subject groups. At least three are taken at the Higher Level (HL), the others at the Standard Level (SL). Tests at the Standard Level require one or more years of study, while Higher Level requires a minimum of two years of study. A score of 4 or greater on a scale of 1 to 7 reflects mastery of the subject tested.
Subject groups include:

Language A — English/World Literature
Language B — French, German or Spanish
Individuals and Societies — History, Economics, Psychology
Experimental Sciences — Biology, Chemistry, Physics
Mathematics
6th Subject — Art/Design, Computer Science, Theatre Arts, 2nd Science, 3rd Language

The award of the Diploma requires a minimum total of 24 points and the satisfactory completion of three additional requirements: the Extended Essay (a 4000 word independent research paper), a course entitled Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and participation in CAS—extra-curriculum, community service activities.

Internationally, approximately 70-75% of IB Diploma candidates earn the Diploma. SDHS has an exceptionally high success rate. In 1998, all students who attempted the Diploma received it. Last year our success rate was 94.7%. Many colleges and universities recognize IB through the admission process, granting advanced course standing and/or college credit of up to one full year.
