How does IB compare with AP?
As a general rule, IB and AP are roughly equivalent to one another on a subject-to-subject comparison, although the Higher Level IB courses tend to go into more depth than does an AP course. The IB's examination system however is more intricate and personalized. IB exams involve students sitting for written exams in most subject areas, oral exams in many areas, and turning in lab books, projects, papers, and other coursework where appropriate. AP exams are at least partially computerized and machine-scored.

The IB is not just a series of demanding courses; it is an integrated curriculum. Whereas participating in the AP program or taking IB certificates in those subjects in which one excels might gain the student college credit, the full IB program trains the student to think critically about learning, to question what she/he is being taught, and to strive to improve in all academic areas.

Universities often recognize the IB through the admission process, the granting of advanced course standing, and the granting of college credit (one course to a full year). The UC colleges provide 30 quarter units to students earning the full Diploma with 30 points or more, or 8 units for each HL exam score of 5 or higher.
